![]() ![]() If you work for HP and are reading this and don't 100% know the answer.call someone at HP who designed this printer and find out and please let me know. In 3 threads I've read about this, the issue has NOT been solved or fully explained.Ĭan the printer be used and print black using only the right XL cartridge or do I need to have both black cartridges full and installed for it to work? And a followup, does the left (bowtie) cartridge need to stay in there for it to work or can I remove it and keep refilling the XL cartidge moving forward with the leftmost slot empty. My question is simple, and please whoever responds, read my questions carefully and don't provide a generic incomplete answer and then put a little checkmark "Solved" next to this issue. Is there a setting I'm missing in the menu where I can select the XL cartidge only? The manual is not clear on this, and I feel this is something that should have been clearly explained. And my printer doesn't print black with only a new XL black 564 installed. Even if I could find it, I don't want to have 2 kinds of black ink cartridges to stock all the time. Although someone said I could find the smaller (bowtie) cartridge at Staples, I can't find it there. From those threads It seems to be clear that HP didn't design this system very well, and I would tend to agree. There are four orange plastic spots, left over from the protective cap. Turn it over and examine the area around the ink port. If the standard troubleshooting did not resolve black not printing I would suggest removing the black cartridge. If photo paper were selected the printer would use the (empty) color cartridges to print even the black portions of a document. The black cartridge uses pigmented ink which is not compatible with photo paper. One other thing to check - make sure you have selected "plain paper" as the media type in the driver. Continue on, and make sure the vents are clear, and also soak the printhead as described in the later steps if the solution is not reached before that. I would suggest going through the troubleshooting steps in the document I gave above, ignore the low ink indications for the color cartridges and proceed past the steps about replacing low cartridges. It is likely that even replacing the color cartridges at this point might not resolve color printing without soaking the printhead.) (Note that running the printer without ink in the color cartridges will probably result in the color portion of the printhead being clogged.
